• This test requires the intravenous administration of edrophonium chloride or neostigmine, drugs that block the breakdown of acetylcholine by cholinesterase ( acetylcholinesterase inhibitors ).
• A tensilon ( edrophonium chloride ) test can be used, which temporarily blocks the breakdown of acetylcholine, and briefly relieves weakness; however, false-negative results are common.
• These tests may include a brain scan, cerebrospinal fluid examination, nerve conduction test ( electromyography, or EMG ), and an edrophonium chloride ( Tensilon ) test for myasthenia gravis.
